Thai nationals living in cities near the Lebanese border in Israel have been ordered to evacuate immediately, according to a Thai PBS World report.

The Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv issued the warning for the attention of Thais living in the northern cities of Metula, Misgav Am and Kfar Giladi.

The order comes amid rapidly escalating tensions in the area, with the Israel Defence Forces declaring the border cities “closed military zones”. The IDF says entering the areas is strictly prohibited. The warning comes as Israel launches a ground operation targetting Hezbollah in Lebanon.

An announcement posted on the Thai Embassy’s Facebook page orders Thai citizens to leave the areas immediately. The post also provides helpline numbers for Thai nationals in need of assistance.

Police in Phuket are investigating an alleged “gang assault” on a 13 year old girl, after her mother filed a complaint.

The 40 year old woman told the authorities that her daughter was lured out of their home, before being physically assaulted by 7 different people. She told Wichit Police that the incident took place around 4.30pm on Sunday, September 29.

According to her complaint, her daughter, identified in a Phuket News report as “Ms Kai”, was picked up from their home in Soi Phasuk, Phuket Town, by 2 acquaintances, identified only as “Ms Fa” and “Ms Tan”.

The mother says the acquaintances deceived her daughter, telling her they wanted to resolve a conflict.

Instead, they took Ms Kai to an unnamed location in Soi Thanit, in the Wichit sub-district. There, she was met by 7 people, who began physically assaulting her. The girl’s mother has accused Ms Fa of participating in the attack.

According to the report, during the attack, the victim noticed the group was filming it. Ms Kai was later dropped off around 200 metres from her home by one of her attackers, identified as “Ms Kaem”.

The Phuket News reports that when the mother learnt of the attack, she took her daughter to Wichit Police Station to file a report. The authorities have now launched an investigation and plan to press charges.

Thailand’s reporting of wet weather and floods is expected to have a negative impact on the number of Chinese tourists visiting over the National Day holiday period.

Sanphet Supabornsatien, an advisor to the Eastern Thai Hotels Association, says the rainfall that has affected parts of the country is expected to result in fewer than expected Chinese visitors.

Hotel operators were optimistic about a surge in visitor numbers during the Chinese holiday period, which runs from October 1 to 7. However, they have reported Chinese tour companies making changes to plans and delaying trips as a result of the bad weather. Tourism operators also blame fluctuating airfares and a general shift in travel behaviour.

Sanphet says hotel operators are working to improve services and accommodate the changes. However, he adds that travellers’ decisions are also influenced by the risk of natural disasters. While there have been no cancellations, plans have been delayed and dates changed, meaning it’s likely the numbers arriving during the Chinese holiday period will be fewer than expected.

Despite a drop in the Chinese tour groups, Sanphet noted that the number of Free Individual Travellers has risen.

Twenty-three people – 20 students and 3 teachers – have died after a school bus they were travelling on caught fire in Pathum Thani, central Thailand, yesterday. Another 16 students and 3 teachers have been hospitalised, with 2 of the students reported to be on ventilators.

The tragedy happened in Pathum Thani province, north of Bangkok, around noon yesterday, with police alerted to a fire on a bus on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road, in the Lam Luk Ka district.

In total, there were 38 school students on the bus, believed to range in age from 6 to 15, along with 6 teachers. They were travelling from Wat Khao Praya Sangkharam school, in the northern province of Uthai Thani, to Ayutthaya.

Rescuers who arrived at the scene reported that a front tyre of the bus had blown out, causing the wheel to catch fire and the bus to hit a road barrier. Fire then ripped through the bus.

Initial reports stated that teachers were unable to open the door. However, the police have confirmed the door could be opened, with a number of passengers escaping that way.

A number of students also escaped by jumping out the window. It’s believed those who perished were in a state of panic and unable to escape the flames in time. The bodies of 10 students were found near the back door of the bus.

In the immediate aftermath, the driver of the bus fled the scene and turned his phone off, but later turned himself in to the authorities. He has been named as 48 year old Samarn Chankut. Further reports have shown the frantic driver running from the bus to grab a fire extinguisher to try and control the conflagration.

Khaosod English reports that a witness named as Krailert Isawat says he was driving beside the bus and saw smoke coming from the roof. He stopped and managed to wave down a public bus, where he got a fire extinguisher. He says numerous people tried to help the passengers trapped in the bus but were beaten back by the fire.

It’s understood PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra burst into tears when told of the tragedy. She has sent a number of senior ministers, including Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, to the scene.

Later that afternoon, the PM visited the surviving students and teachers. It’s understood she has ordered Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin to ensure there is sufficient medical personnel to give them the psychological support they need.

The authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Monday, September 23, 2024 – Phuket weather, sunset times, air quality and tides (7am)

The forecast couldn’t be more different from a week ago. Today we have, predominantly, blue skies and light winds with a very low chance of rain. But there are a few downpours forecast during the week, but a lot fewer than last week’s deluge. Mostly clean air prevails around the island today, very light winds forecast for the next few days at least. At top today of 31! First day over 30 for about 2 weeks.

Sunday, September 22, 2024 – Phuket weather, sunset times, air quality and tides (7am)

The worst of the poor weather is behind us, at least for now. Phuket is bathed in, mostly, sunshine this morning. Moderate to occasionally strong winds are coming in from the south west. Better weather ahead generally but with a return of rain on Tuesday, according to the forecast. Good air quality too. Yay!!!

    Tides for Sunday

Saturday, September 21, 2024 – Phuket weather, sunset times, air quality and tides (7am)

The “Weekend of things getting better”. After the week of winds and rain, things are definitely on the improve today and tomorrow. Less rain in the forecast and the westerly winds are beginning to moderate and swing to the south west. The clean air report is good as Phuket gets back into full swing – you’ll still need an umbrella if you’re out and about. A top temperature of 29. Embrace the ‘slightly’ better weather!

    Saturday’s tide times…

    ‘Good’ and ‘moderate’ air reports…

    Sunrise and sunset…

    7 day rain forecast…

A slightly clearer radar shot this morning…

Friday, September 20, 2024 – Phuket weather, sunset times, air quality and tides (7am)

The meteorological carnage continues for another two days BUT will moderate on Sunday with next week looking much drier, albeit with a few showers. More blustery winds, tending south westerly today and tomorrow. Most of the heavier rain today appears concentrated north of the island, whilst Phuket has a bit of a dry spell this morning.

For some reason (the rain clogging up the system), we are only registering ‘moderate’ air quality today but you can assured it’s actually very clean air. A top temperature today of 29 – take your umbrella.

    7 day rain forecast

    Sunrise and sunset

Air quality report (we think it’s a bit dodgy today)

    Friday tide times

Thursday, September 19, 2024 – Phuket weather, sunset times, air quality and tides (7am)

More of the same today, with blustery westerly winds, making the west coast beaches very dangerous. This weather, with the rain storms washing in from the Andaman Sea, will continue into the weekend but start to abate on Sunday. A warning remains for potential flooding and landslides in parts of the island (but most of the island is still trafficable and very safe). Air quality is ‘good’, but only a top temperature of 28 degrees today.

This morning’s radar shows some consistent rain for Phuket this morning…

Today’s winds forecasts and 7 day rain forecast.

    Sunrise and sunset

    Air quality report

    Thursday’s tides

Wednesday, September 18, 2024 – Phuket weather, sunset times, air quality and tides (7am)

A blustery, wet and stormy day today – best to arrange some indoor activities or shopping. More rain in the afternoon, and this will continue until Sunday when we should see the winds abate and veer more to the south west. Heavy rain, and possible flooding, is expected throughout this week. But the air quality report is excellent 🙂 A top of only 28 today.

    7 day rain forecast

    Sunrise and sunset

    Mostly “good” air quality report

    Wednesday tide times (but… really… don’t bother)

While the floods are receding in the Mueang district of Chiang Mai, many communities have been left struggling with polluted flood water. Residents say the stagnant water in low-lying areas is now so polluted, it poses a health risk.

Dead fish can be seen floating in the water, left over after a week of flooding, while locals complain of how badly it smells.

One resident in the sub-district of Chompoo says that in addition to losing all her possessions to the floods, she now has to walk through polluted flood water every day.

The pollution has caused her to break out in a rash, for which she’s had to seek medical attention. She is one of several residents urging the local authorities to take action and pump out the contaminated water urgently.

Meanwhile, in the Saraphi district, a resident says the water smells bad and is very polluted, making her toilet unusable and daily life a struggle for all residents.

Chiang Mai governor Nirat Pongsitthithavorn has ordered extra personnel and equipment into the affected areas, in order to pump out the polluted water and collect rubbish which is blocking a number of drains.

A shortage of water pumps has been reported, which is being blamed for the slow progress in getting rid of the remaining water. Thai PBS World reports that a number of homes have their own water pumps and have managed to drain water from their properties, but other areas are still struggling.

The arrest of 2 Syrian nationals at Phuket International Airport is the latest in a series of arrests made by immigration officers at the airport in the last week.

The Phuket News reports that the two Syrians, both 23 year old men, were apprehended at Immigration after trying to enter the kingdom on fake United Arab Emirates passports. The arrests took place at 1.30pm on Sunday, September 29.

The arrest of the Syrian travellers follows that of a 38 year old Chinese woman, who was arrested on arrival in Phuket on Sunday, September 22. According to the report, she was detained in the Arrivals Hall at around 1.30am.

She has been charged under Section 137 for giving false information to officials, and under Section 269/11 for using someone else’s passport, possibly causing harm to others. She was taken to Sakhu Police Station for legal processing.

Meanwhile, at around 1pm on Thursday, September 26, immigration officers at the airport arrested a 25 year old Thai man who was attempting to leave Thailand.

Officers discovered that Thung Song Provincial Court, in the southern province of Nakhon Sri Thammarat, had issued an arrest warrant for the man, after he failed to appear in court on drug charges.

He has been transferred to Thung Song Provincial Court to face legal action.

The next day, Friday, September 27, immigration officers at the airport were joined by officers from the Crime Suppression Division and arrested a 30 year old Thai woman at around 9.40pm.

It’s understood the woman is wanted under an arrest warrant issued for defamation. The charge against her has been described as “joint defamation by advertising”, according to the Phuket News.

She too was trying to leave the kingdom, but was detained in the International Departures Hall. She has been transferred to Phuket Provincial Court for legal proceedings.

Out of all the amazing festivals and parades in the world each year, Phuket was recognised for its ‘Phuket Peranakan Festival 2024’, for which it received the Gold Pinnacle Award for Best Parade.

After being closed to visitors for 2 months, Maya Bay, on Koh Phi Phi Leh, in the southern province of Krabi, reopens today. The bay became famous worldwide thanks to its starring role in the 2000 Leonard di Caprio movie, The Beach. The bay attracts hundreds of tours each week from nearby Krabi or Phuket.

Attapon Charoenchansa, chief of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, has confirmed that after a closure of 2 months to give the fragile ecosystem a break, the tourist hotspot will reopen to visitors today.

The bay has been temporarily closed to visitors every year since 2018.

5 Star Marine runs daily private tours out to Maya Bay and the Phi Phi islands.

At the peak of its popularity, over 100 longtail boats and speedboats, packed with tourists, would moor in the bay every day, resulting in 5-6,000 pairs of feet trampling around the beach and the boats throwing their anchors over the side. The delicate coral reefs were destroyed as a result, and the blacktip reef sharks that called the bay home all but disappeared.

Finally, in 2018, officials decided to take action and announced that the beach would be closed for 4 months in order to allow the ecosystem to recover. Then came the pandemic, which further extended the rehabilitation period. Now the bay is routinely closed for 2 months every year, with strict conditions applied – including a cap on daily visitor numbers – when it reopens.

According to a Bangkok Post report, officers from the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park have prepared for the reopening, placing buoys to safeguard both the coral and tourists.

A café in central Thailand has been forced to close for 30 days after the owner shoved and verbally abused a foreign tourist.

The café is located at the popular Talad Rom Hub train market, in the Mae Klong district of Samut Songkhram province, southwest of Bangkok. The market is popular with tourists as trains pass right through it, with vendors having to pull down awnings and push back shop fronts each time a train passes.

Unfortunately for the owner of one particular café at the market, footage of him verbally abusing and pushing a Spanish tourist has gone viral.

    VIDEO: YouTube/GMM25Thailand

The footage, filmed on Thursday, September 26, has sparked outrage among netizens and the café owner has been ordered to close his café for 30 days. He has also been given a warning that if he behaves in a similar manner again, his business will be permanently banned from the market.

The Bangkok Post reports that tourist police launched an investigation after the café owner, named only as Jame, admitted his behaviour and made a video to apologise to the Spanish tourist and to the Thai people.

It’s not clear what sparked the café owner’s behaviour. However, a representative of Mae Klong railway station says the incident took place on property owned by the State Railway of Thailand and therefore the man had no right to push the tourist away. The station says it has sent the café owner a formal letter over the matter.
