BANGKOK (NNT) – The Prime Minister has reminded people traveling during Songkran to travel safety, by obeying traffic rules and being considerate to other motorists, and to strictly comply with the preventative measures against the spread of COVID-19.

The Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri, today mentioned the Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha had sent his well wihes to people traveling this Songkran holiday, either visiting their hometown or making a trip, to travel safe, respect the traffic rules, be considerate to other motorists, never drink and drive, in order to prevent accidents and loss of life.

The Prime Minister thanked officials working during the Thai New Year holidays for their dedication and sacrifice.

This year, the Department of Highways has set up 147 service points throughout the country’s highway network, where road users can stop to take a rest or ask for directions. Some of these service points have officials on hand to assist in cases of accidents or engine malfunctions.

Drivers could be asked to stop at one of some 3,000 police checkpoints across the country for alcohol level checks. 312 of these police checkpoints are located in strategic areas of Bangkok and other provinces to help ensure road safety.

With the new wave of COVID-19 cases, members of the public are urged to follow all preventative measures, from social distancing, to mask wearing, hand washing, and temperature screening, and to use the government’s Thai Chana travel history logging app, and Mor Chana location-based contact tracing app.

Google Maps is now displaying the location of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hua Hin.

Google Maps introduced its so-called ‘COVID layer’ feature last year in order to display local infection rates to users.

The feature informs users on how the virus is spreading locally so they can plan ahead before travelling to a location.

The feature details where infections are rising or declining by using a colour coded system with grey being the lowest and dark red signalling when there have been more than 40 local cases.

Google says it uses “multiple authoritative sources” to source the relevant information on the number of infections, understood to be official data from Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health.

The feature is part of Google’s effort to assist in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

“As global communities respond to COVID-19, we’ve heard from public health officials that the same type of aggregated, anonymized insights we use in products such as Google Maps could be helpful as they make critical decisions to combat COVID-19,” a spokesperson for the tech giant said when the feature launched last year.

“These Community Mobility Reports aim to provide insights into what has changed in response to policies aimed at combating COVID-19.

“The reports chart movement trends over time by geography, across different categories of places such as retail and recreation, groceries and pharmacies, parks, transit stations, workplaces, and residential.”

The news comes after 87 new COVID-19 infections were reported in Hua Hin on Friday.

Following the announcement on Friday of 87 new COVID-19 cases in Hua Hin, Provincial Governor Pallop Sinhaseni has revealed how the new wave of infections spread to Hua Hin.

According to Mr Pallop, most of the new cases can be linked to the cluster discovered at the popular Maya Pub.

Mr Pallop said that on 30th March a concert was held at the pub which featured a performance by Thai pop star Joey Boy.

While Joey Boy has since tested negative for the virus, the concert was attended by a woman who works at the Krystal Club in Bangkok and her boyfriend.

The Krystal Club has been linked to the large cluster of cases in Bangkok’s Thonglor district.

Reports in Thai language media from earlier this week said that the Krystal Club is a popular hangout with Thai VIPs and Bangkok high-society crowd.

Mr Pallop also said that an investigation is underway to determine if the Maya  Pub  breached licensing laws by remaining open beyond the 1am closing hour. If so, the pubs owners will face legal action, Mr Pallop said.

Provincial Governor Pallop Sinhaseni on Friday announced 87 new COVID-19 cases in Hua Hin.

Most of the cases were linked to the cluster at the Maya Pub located on Petkasem Road.

Of the new cases, 60 people had been admitted to hospitals in various districts around the province, with arrangements being made to admit the other patients.

Currently, Hua Hin and the surrounding area has capacity for 422 COVID-19 patients, with more resources available via field hospitals should the number of new cases continue to rise.

Mr Pallop urged local people to remain calm and said that while the number of cases is likely to rise further, the situation remains under control.

He added that Hua Hin is still a safe destination for anyone wishing to visit for Songkran and any venue visited by a patient has been thoroughly disinfected.

Meanwhile, the governor said that legal action will be taken against the pub if it is found to have remained open past the 1am closing hour.

Thailand will close entertainment venues in 41 provinces Thailand’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced on Thursday.

The move is to help prevent further spread of the virus following the arrival of the more contagious ‘British’ variant.

On Thursday the CCSA said that all bars, pubs, nightclubs and massage parlours must close.

Restaurants can remain open and at the time of publishing are permitted to serve alcohol. However, social distancing measures must be strictly enforced.

While there is no outright ban on inter-provincial travel, non-essential travel should be avoided and people should work from home where possible, the CCSA said.

On Thursday, Thailand reported 405 new COVID-19 cases. In Hua Hin, as of Friday morning, 30 cases had been confirmed.

The spike of cases in Hua Hin is linked to a cluster of cases from the Maya Pub on Petchkasem Road.

Locally, a number of businesses have closed temporarily after having been visited by people who later tested positive for COVID-19.

The Maya Pub has been ordered to close for 14 days, while True Arena Sports Club and the Banyan Golf Club both posted on social media to confirm they were closing temporarily in order for deep cleaning to take place.

At the time of publishing there were no travel restrictions for anyone entering Hua Hin, apart from people who have visited venues elsewhere where COVID-19 cases have been confirmed.

Anyone, who for example visited bars in Thonglor in Bangkok, the source of a recent cluster of cases, should quarantine for 14 days on arrival in Hua Hin.
