Thai police arrested a British man after he allegedly begged for money outside a convenience store on Koh Phangan, an island in the southern province of Surat Thani.

Locals on Koh Phangan reported to authorities after seeing a foreign man begging outside a 7-Eleven convenience store and using drugs in the area. Officers from the Koh Phangan Police Station and the Tourist Police went to the store near the Phan Thip Market and arrested the foreigner yesterday, April 17.

The foreign beggar was identified as a 47 year old Englishman named Nicholas James Hartas. He was found sitting shirtless outside the store with a paper sign that said, “If you can. Please! Money for food.

Police checked Hartas’s criminal history and found that he had escaped arrest in a drug case in Koh Samui and sought refuge in Koh Phangan. Hartas confessed to fleeing from the arrest in Koh Samui, stating that he resorted to begging for food. However, residents informed the police that the majority of the money earned from begging was used to purchase drugs.

Officers did not report whether they conducted a drug test on Hartas or found any drugs in his possession. According to www.matichon.co.th, Hartas faced two charges:

    • Section 13 of the Begging Control Act: illegally begging. The penalty is imprisonment of up to one month or a fine of up to 10,000 baht.
    • Section 145 of the Narcotics Control Act: possessing Category 1 drug (methamphetamine). The penalty is imprisonment from two to 20 years and a fine of 200,000 to 2 million baht.

Police arrested Ibragim Gaitukiev, 36, at a house on Sri Thanu beach in tambon Koh Phangan of this southern province, Pol Maj Gen Sermphan Sirikhong, chief of Surat Thani province, said on Friday.

The arrest followed a police investigation that a bitcoin website had run advertisements online to buy and sell cryptocurrencies in Koh Samui and Koh Phangan districts of Surat Thani. The phone and WhatsApp number shown on the website for customers to contact were linked to the bank accounts of Mr Gaitukiev and another foreign national, Maksim Variukhin, according to the Surat Thani police chief.

Police investigators found the two foreign nationals were executives of OM 118 Co on Koh Phangan in Surat Thani. The company used a house on Sri Thanu beach on this tourist island as its office.

The house also ran a cannabis shop, “Plantasia cannabis collective’’, with a sign reading “Bitcoin’’ placed in front of the shop, according to the police investigation.

Mr Gatukiev was present during the search and told police he was the owner of the shop.

The arresting team searched the cannabis shop and found no illegal items. There were advertisements about cryptocurrency exchange inside the shop.

Mr Gatukiev was arrested for illegally running a cryptocurrency exchange.

During questioning, he allegedly admitted that he and Mr Variukhin had provided digital currency services to tourists.

Mr Gatukiev was charged and taken to Koh Phangan police station for legal action. Police did not provide details regarding the other foreign national.

  • Moroccan man confesses to murder of Austrian DJ Max Hartl on Koh Phangan Island

A Moroccan national has been arrested in connection with the murder of an Austrian DJ on Phangan island in Surat

The post Moroccan man confesses to murder of Austrian DJ Max Hartl on Koh Phangan Island appeared first on Koh Phangan Island News.

A Moroccan national has been arrested in connection with the murder of an Austrian DJ on Phangan island in Surat Thani province.

The suspect was identified as Anas Rakib, 37, who police said was a friend of the 42-year-old DJ, Max Hartl.

Hartl’s body was found on Thursday beside a small road at the foot of a hill. He had suffered extensive blunt force trauma to his head and face.

Police said witnesses pointed to Rakib as the perpetrator, saying he was the last person to be with the victim before he was found dead. The suspect was arrested on Friday and was questioned by senior provincial officers at Koh Phangan district police station.

Hartl’s sister Martina Shelley told police that he had worked as a DJ at a food shop on the island for seven years. She said that before he was murdered, the victim had been partying with eight or nine friends at his home at the foot of the hill. Shelley suspected that her brother might have been involved in an argument with some of his friends that led to his murder.

Pol Colonel Sirichai Suksart, deputy chief of the Surat Thani police, said on Friday that the suspect admitted that the two had quarrelled after the party and confessed to the murder.

Sirichai headed the questioning with the participation of the superintendent of Koh Phangan district police station, Pol Colonel Panya Nirattimanont. Sirichai told the media that he was assigned by his supervisors to oversee the investigation.

He said initial investigations found that the victim and the suspect knew each other and had been drinking together at Hartl’s house before getting into a major argument.

Rakib was the only suspect in this case, according to the officer.

“The suspect claimed that he asked to leave but the house owner did not let him go, so they started quarrelling,” Sirichai said.

He added that Rakib told investigators he left the house but the victim followed him and they had a fight by the side of the road. The suspect claimed he used a steel object from the victim’s pickup truck to hit him repeatedly until he stopped moving. The suspect also suffered injuries to his head and neck.

“We are gathering evidence to charge the suspect Anas Rakib with murder,” the officer said.

Backpacker Hugo Mooney, from Bristol, was stabbed in the neck during a row at a bar on the ‘Full Moon Party’ island of Koh Pha Ngan in Thailand before being saved by a nearby doctor

On the night of January 28, at the heart of a Full Moon Party in Thailand, a British tourist, Hugo Mooney, found himself in a life-threatening situation. The frightful incident unfolded at Bamboo Bar on the island of Koh Pha Ngan, where Mooney was enjoying his backpacking trip. An unwelcome altercation with an Israeli national, Eliran Alias, escalated into a violent confrontation, leading to Mooney being stabbed in the neck with a broken beer bottle.

He claims Israeli national Eliran Alias was harassing his female friend as she was walking to the toilet and when he tried to intervene, the Israeli tourist attacked him with a smashed beer bottle and plunged the sharp end into his neck | picture credit @ viralPress

The stabbing incident in a bar at the Full Moon Party

Mooney had stepped into the fray when Alias was allegedly harassing a female friend. After Mooney intervened, asking Alias to leave his companion alone, the situation rapidly deteriorated. Alias, apparently incensed, attacked Mooney, inflicting a deep wound on his neck which bled profusely. Along with the critical neck injury, Mooney suffered additional wounds to his face, ear, and arm.

Amid this horrifying ordeal, a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of a Canadian doctor, vacationing at the same bar. The medical professional, whose identity remains undisclosed, rushed to Mooney’s aid, delivering crucial first aid on the spot. It was this immediate medical intervention that saved Mooney’s life. Following this, Mooney was transported to the First Western Hospital and later transferred to Koh Phangan Hospital, where he has since made significant progress in his recovery.

    Questions raised over police investigation

In the aftermath of the attack, Thai police apprehended Alias. However, he was later released on bail, an action that sparked suspicion and frustration in Mooney. He claimed that he was asked to ‘make a deal’ with Alias, who even offered €100,000 for Mooney to drop the case. However, the investigating officer, Police Lieutenant Patcharapol Wanghin, has vehemently denied any allegations of corruption, insisting that the investigation will proceed fairly and impartially.
