(MCOT) BANGKOK, Dec 19 - Thailand's Suvarnabhumi Airport's Airport Link will open and operate its check-in service for the first time on Jan 4, while passenger fares will be raised as it rises to full service after a four-month introductory operation period, according to Permanent Secretary for Transport Supoj Saplom.

Mr Supoj, in his capacity as board chairman of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), made his remarks after inspecting the readiness of the new check-in service and baggage handling systems at the City Air Terminal also known as Makkasan Station.

The Airport Link train connecting Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi airport will go in operation for commercial service from Aug 23, Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum said on Tuesday.

Mr Sohpon said the date was settled after a consultation with the State Railway of Thailand.

The Airport Link will offer two types of service on parallel rails - the City Line which stops at every station to transport passengers from Phaya Thai to Suvarnabhumi airport and the non-stop Airport Express which runs from Makkasan to the airport.

The fare for the City Line starts from 15 baht and the Airport Express 100 baht per trip.

BANGKOK, Sept 5 (TNA) -- The long-delayed Airport Rail Link project, providing direct rail service to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport, will start providing free service to the public from this December 5 which coincides with the birthday celebrations of His Majesty the King, said State Railway of Thailand (SRT) Governor Yuthana Tupcharoen.

People interested in free rides on December 5 may apply for tickets beginning October 1 at either the Airport Rail Link office or at SRT headquarters, Mr. Yuthana said.

Test runs of the system have been conducted since February by Siemens, the manufacturer and installer of the rail system, and no problems have been found. However, independent engineers will inspect the safety system for the next three months and if no problems are found, the system will be ready for operation.

BANGKOK, Aug 23 (TNA) -- The Airports of Thailand Public Co., Ltd. (AoT) will submit its plans to construct third runway and a domestic passenger terminal building at Suvarnabhumi Airport to a Cabinet meeting this October, said AoT President Serirat Prasutanond.

If approved by the Cabinet, both plans which will be financed by AoT of about Bt10 billion could be completed within three years, said Mr. Serirat.

Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok will have 126 new high-speed Internet kiosks installed by CAT Telecom, in the company’s joint venture with the airport authority.

The new kiosks will feature fast 10 Mbps Internet access and will be free-of-charge for tourists.

This move is part of an overall effort to help the Thai airport achieve a ranking in the world’s top 10 airports by the end of this year, according to the Airports of Thailand (AoT) president, Sereerat Prasutanont.

BANGKOK, March 6 (TNA) - Thailand’s national flag carrier Thai Airways International (THAI) will stop using Don Muang airport and operate all flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport as of the end of this month, acting THAI president Narongsak Sangkhapong said Friday.

Under the single-airport policy, THAI aircraft will no longer use Don Muang from March 29. The carrier said it would inform the public regarding the move by March 15 to prevent confusion among passengers over the relocation of flights.

The airline's ground equipment at Don Muang will be removed beginning next Friday and only chartered flights will continue to use the airport, he said.

Direct express rail service linking Suvarnabhumi Airport to downtown Bangkok will commence in December, 2009, with the public getting free rides for one month.

Tawanrat Ornsira, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Transport Ministry and chairman of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) board, said Wednesday that construction of the direct Airport Link, a 28-km rail link between Suvarnabhumi and the City Air Terminal in Bangkok’s Makkasan area, is now 98 per cent complete. The builder is expected to hand over the Airport Link to the SRT in September.

After the official handover, the rail link’s security system will be inspected and tested prior to launching a one-month period of free rides starting from December 5, according to Mr. Tawanrat.
