The Government is proceeding with its plan to create lasting peace in the southern border provinces. Eight years ago, violent incidents erupted in the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, and the conflicts have dragged on to this day.
The Government will form a new center to integrate policies and operations, so that the resolving of problems in the southern border provinces will be quicker and more effective.
Human rights education has been provided for army and police personnel operating in the southern border provinces.
A group of security officials operating in the deep South of Thailand have also served as teachers to provide local people with better education under the “Traveling Teacher” project.
Satun, one of Thailand’s five southernmost provinces, is noted for not only tourist destinations but also native food. It is organizing a major food festival, as a way of helping promote local tourism.
Respect for human rights has been cited as the focus when it comes to dealing with the situation in the southern border provinces of Thailand.
Aware of the importance of public health services to improve local people’s living conditions in the deep South of Thailand, the Fourth Army Area Command’s Internal Security Operations Command, Forward, Unit has initiated a major development project, known as “Traveling Doctor.”
Local villagers in Ban Pareh, Barahom subdistrict, Mueang district of the southern border province of Pattani, lead their life under the Sufficiency Economy principles and have been known for their unique method of coping with drug problems among youth.
The Reconciliation Promotion Center in the southern border province of Pattani has been recognized for its role in ensuring justice for persons suspected of creating unrest and for its success in encouraging perpetrators to make a fresh start.
The Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center is working out a roadmap for improving the situation in the southern border provinces. The Secretary-General of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center, Mr. Panu Uthairat, stated that the roadmap is aimed at restoring peace in the deep South as a tribute to His Majesty the King on the occasion of his 84th birthday celebrations this year.
