Bangkok, 6 December 2024 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to welcome the delegation of the 7th One Belt One Road Colourful Yunnan Car Rally in Thailand, an 18-day journey exploring major and hidden-gem destinations across the country. This significant event marks the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China in 2025, celebrating the enduring bond between the two nations.

Mr. Chuwit Sirivachkul, Director of TAT’s East Asia Region, said, “The Chinese market, especially car rally tourists, plays a vital role in enhancing Thailand’s tourism infrastructure and services. This initiative not only promotes travel to Thailand’s hidden-gem destinations but also offers visitors the opportunity to experience our country’s breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural diversity, and the warm hospitality of the Thai people.”

Comprising 45 vehicles and 120 participants from the People’s Republic of China, the rally began its journey from China on 19 November 2024, entering Thailand through the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge in Mukdahan on 22 November. Over the next 18 days, the rally will visit multiple provinces, including Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Ayutthaya, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Saraburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, and Nong Khai. Throughout their journey, participants will engage in tourism activities that support local economies in both major cities and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

The delegation was warmly welcomed in Nakhon Ratchasima on 3 December 2024. Hosted by TAT, the reception dinner featured a traditional Bai Sri Su Kwan welcoming ceremony, where sacred threads were tied around the wrists of guests to bring blessings, protection, and strengthen bonds. The event also included cultural performances, such as a traditional Isaan music show and a lively folk-dance session, offering guests an authentic taste of Thai culture.

The rally is part of a broader effort to enhance bilateral cooperation under the ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative. The event underscores the shared goals of economic, cultural, and tourism exchange, while embracing the Chinese phrase “Zhong Tai Yi Jia Qin” – which can be transcribed as “China and Thailand Are As Close As One Family,” further strengthening the ties between the peoples of both nations.

    Key Market Insights

Malaysia is one of Thailand’s top inbound markets, with over 4.6 million visitors recorded in 2023. This momentum continues in 2024, with 4,145,049 arrivals from January to October, suggesting a new record by year-end. Proximity, affordability, and Thailand’s diverse attractions—including gastronomy, natural beauty, quality accommodations, and shopping—make it a favourite destination for Malaysian tourists.

Key destinations for Malaysian travellers include Songkhla, Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai, with rising interest in Phang-Nga and Surat Thani’s islands. The waiver of the TM6 immigration form at the Sadao border, implemented in November 2023 and extended until April 2025, has significantly streamlined travel, encouraging spontaneous visits.

Seamless Travel by Land and Air

Thailand’s land borders with Malaysia, serviced by nine permanent checkpoints such as Sadao (Songkhla) and Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah), are vital for cross-border travel. In 2023, 1,514,134 Malaysians entered Thailand through the Sadao checkpoint, with daily arrivals averaging 3,855. The TM6 waiver boosted November-December arrivals by 45.55%, with daily averages rising to 5,611. This growth continues into 2024, with 1,459,180 land arrivals recorded from January to September, reflecting a 28.37% year-on-year increase.

Air connectivity between Malaysia and Thailand has also rebounded strongly. In 2023, operations reached 77% of pre-pandemic levels, and 2024 projections show an 83.59% increase, with flights expected to reach 13,884. Recent route launches, including AirAsia’s Kuala Lumpur-Pattaya flights in June and Malaysia Airlines’ Kuala Lumpur-Chiang Mai service in August, have expanded options. Popular routes to Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Hat Yai remain highly active, ensuring robust connectivity and tourism growth.

Ms. Pattaraanong concluded, “The addition of Batik Air Malaysia’s Bangkok-Johor Bahru flight marks a significant step in fostering greater travel opportunities and enriching the relationship between Thailand and Malaysia. With strong connectivity by both land and air and a continued focus on seamless travel, Thailand looks forward to welcoming even more Malaysian visitors in the future.”

  • Driving in Thailand: Essential Guidelines for Tourists and Foreigners

Planning to drive in Thailand? Learn about licence requirements, traffic rules, and renting vehicles, plus tips for staying safe on the road. Whether you’re exploring scenic landscapes or bustling cities, these essential guidelines will help you navigate Thailand confidently and safely.

The post Driving in Thailand: Essential Guidelines for Tourists and Foreigners appeared first on TAT Newsroom.

Thailand offers tourists the opportunity to explore its scenic landscapes and vibrant cities via self-driving. However, understanding the rules and procedures for driving in Thailand is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Below are key guidelines and tips for tourists and foreigners driving in Thailand.

    Driver’s Licence Requirements

To drive legally in Thailand, you must hold a valid driver’s licence. Foreigners can use:

    1. A licence issued under Thai law.
    2. An International Driving Permit (IDP), valid under international agreements.
    3. A licence from an ASEAN member country, by presenting their domestic licence.

Those without these documents must apply for a Thai driving licence. Necessary documents include a valid passport, a residence certificate, a health certificate, and proof of completion of the online e-learning course.

    Vehicle Safety and Traffic Rules

    1. Seat Belts and Helmets: Always wear seat belts while driving. Motorbike riders and passengers must wear helmets.
    2. Pedestrian Awareness: Drive cautiously near pedestrian crossings, as pedestrians have the right of way.
    3. Traffic Signals and Speed Limits: Adhere to traffic lights and speed regulations. Speed limits vary by area and type of road.

    Renting Vehicles

To rent a car or motorbike, you must present a valid driving licence or IDP. Select reputable rental companies and inspect vehicles for roadworthiness, such as valid registration and insurance. Without proper documentation, insurance coverage may be void in case of accidents.

    Emergency Procedures

In the event of an accident:

    1. Assist the injured and call emergency services (dial 1669).
    2. Report the incident to the police by dialling 191.
    3. Inform your car rental provider or insurance company immediately.

Emergency contact numbers to keep handy include:

    • 1584: Complaints about public transport.
    • 1137: Accident reporting.
    • 1669: Medical emergencies.

    Tips for Safe Travel

    • Drive on the left side of the road.
    • Avoid driving under the influence.
    • Respect local road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

Driving in Thailand can be a rewarding experience if you are well-prepared and follow the rules. Stay informed and vigilant to make your journey through the Land of Smiles safe and memorable.
